Guiding people to new places in an Ocean environment is an exciting and rewarding challenge. To take people into a world that they would not explore on their own and to do this safely takes not only sound Sea Kayaking Skills, but also a sound understanding of your environment, the people under your care and a healthy dose of good judgment.

The Australian Canoeing L2 rating is the benchmark standard required for all Sea Kayaking Operators Australia Wide and the basis for ratification to International Outdoor Agencies. Whether you are already in the Sea Kayaking Industry or looking to develop and progress your skills in this field this course will ensure you meet the standards required by Permitting Bodies and Industry Regulators alike. 

The SKJB - Australian Canoeing Sea Kayak Guide L2 Award Course is a preparatory program designed to give you the training you need to be able to assess the risks involved in an activity, to conduct a program accordingly, and to provide clients under your guidance with the necessary information they need to have a fun and exhilarating day on the water. It will give you the basis from which you can then go out to gian industry expereince through commercial operators or clubs. The Australian Canoeing Sea Kayak Guide L2 qualification is a stand alone award, and an essential step towards becoming and Australian Canoeing Sea Kayak Instructor L2. You will need to have an AC Sea Skills Award or be AC Sea Skills equivalent as a pre-requisite to undertaking the SKJB Sea Guide training.

This Nationally Recognized Award enables the holder :

to guide groups of novices on activity and expedition based programs in sea kayaks at sea defined as outside of estuaries, embayments or other sheltering reefs or islands in moderate conditions:

  • Below “strong wind warnings” conditions (forecast or observed of greater than 25 knots);
  • Assessed in minimum winds of 11 – 16 knots;
  • Areas of exposed coastline that is simple, not involving overfalls, tidal races, difficult landings or open crossings may be included;
  • Crossings of less than 10 nautical miles;
  • Breaking (overtopping) waves (sea) up to 1 m;
  • Surf to 1m.

Further assessment requirements

  • Logbook: Six Sea environment trips of a minimum of three hours duration over a period of at least two years
  • Two different overnight coastal sea kayak trips
  • Six guided sea activities of at least three hours duration as an observer under training or as an assistant Guide (must be in two different locations)
  • Two guided sea activities of at least six hours duration as lead guide under observation of a qualified guide
  • Two self-contained overnight trip in a sea environment of at least 25 km distance.
  • Current Apply first aid certificate

2 Day Course Price $450.00

Please Note: The Course cost above is based on a Min. Group number of Two. There is no assessment involved in this program. Assessment needs to take place on a separate day by arrangement with SKJB at further cost and a theory assignment needs to be completed as part of this assessment. A fee of $170.00 also applies for Australian Canoeing Certification Processing and is Valid for Three years. Some further log book experience sessions will be required to finalise the Award.
